Madelyn Marie surprised mommy and daddy by arriving early - but it wasn't because she wanted to. During our regular check-up on Tuesday, January 22 mommy's blood pressure was much higher than it had normally been (158/95), she had gained 5lbs in one week, was retaining a lot of water, had super active reflexes, a bad headache and had been feeling a little anxious and off. All of these combined were warning signs of preeclampsia which resulted in us taking a short walk from the clinic to labor and delivery.
When we arrived to labor and delivery we were set-up in a monitoring room where they monitored Sara's blood pressure, baby B's movements and heart rate and the number and intensity of contractions Sara was having. They also gave her some Tylenol to try and get the headache to go away. After spending the next 5 hours being monitored we were told we could go home but Sara had to collect her urine for the next 24 hours so it could be tested for preeclampsia. It also meant that Sara would be working from home again on Wednesday. Thankfully, Ryan was able to work from home that day too as we had to go back to the doctor that afternoon to drop off the urine and have a blood pressure check.
When we arrived at the hospital we dropped of the urine at the lab and went up to labor and delivery to have Sara's blood pressure checked again. We ended up being there for a couple hours in the hopes of getting the urine results right away but since it was taking longer than expected our doctor said it was okay for us to go home. Sara's doctor was working the 24 hour shift at the hospital Wednesday night so she was going to call us with Sara's urine results and let us know what the plan was if her levels were elevated.
After we left the hospital we decided to grab dinner while we waited for Dr. Mirau to call with the urine results. We waited until about 9:30pm before we called the hospital to see if the results were in yet, which they weren't but Dr. Mirau thought she would receive them within an hour so we waited patiently for her to call us back. We knew that if the urine results came back at or near 300 baby B would be making her arrival early, as in the next day - Thursday, January 24. When Dr. Mirau called back at 10:30pm she said Sara's urine test came back at 350 which meant we would be having baby B the next morning. We were told we had to be at the hospital 6:00am and the c-section was planned for 7:30am. After getting over the inital shock that we would be parents in a few short hours we finished packing our hospital bags, sent some work emails and tried to get some sleep - I think we managed to get about 4 or 5 :)
When we got to the hospital we got set-up in our room and everything started to progress quickly. And at 7:35am Sara walked to the OR, Ryan waited outside until the spinal epidural was done and came into the room about 7:50am. As soon as Ryan got into the OR Dr. Mirau started the procedure and Madelyn Marie was born at 8:04am. The rest of the procedure went well and everything was done by 8:35am. Since everyone was doing well Madelyn got to stay in the OR with us while they finished the procedure and we were all brought back to our room together where we spent the next few hours admiring our beautiful baby girl.
We spent a few days in the hospital and on Sunday we got to bring little Madelyn home. Ryan has two weeks of paternity leave and the three of us have been doing great. We are still on cloud 9 and are loving getting to know Madelyn. We are constantly admiring her and all her cute features, we enjoy hearing all her cute noises and love her many facial expressions. It's hard to believe she is already one week old - time seems to be flying by so we are doing all we can to live in each moment and take everything in.
